A fair is a gathering where people from different parts come and join to celebrate a festival, season or a good harvest. In the modern cities, fairs are held almost every week. Some of them are trade fair, science fair, book fair or others. In the villages, fairs are held once a year typically at the time of the harvest and on a large scale.

Village fair are very different from the ones held in cities. They are not held at regular intervals throughout the year but once or twice a year. They are not held to display and sell latest products, nor for product advertisements. They are simple yet fun. The true meaning of fair is to celebrate the happiness and celebrate it with others. This cannot be found in the city fairs no matter how hard someone try. I was lucky enough to join one such fair in my village.

In a village fair, the people of three or four villages come together to celebrate their good harvest and to offer their thanks to the deities for their kind grace. Over a hundred of people gathers to sell their goods, handicraft or toys or to simply enjoy the fair.

Early in the morning, the sellers starts to set up their stalls. As the sun rises the people begun entering the fair. After praying to the Gods and Goddess for the good harvest, the fair begun. There are multiple sections dedicated to a particular type of good. The sellers say aloud the prices to attract the buyers and their are food stalls at regular intervals. By the afternoon, it is almost impossible to count the number of people inside and the noises are so loud that it was very hard to hear the person who is standing right beside.

As the sun sets, the crowd slowly grow smaller and smaller. The sellers starts to wrap up their goods and counts the profits made that day. They get out their portable tents and sleep right next to their stalls, dreaming about the sales they would make the next day.

It would not be wrong to say that a village fair is a true one in sense and the city one is just a cheap copy of it with only goal of selling goods rather than celebrating an occasion. The village fair is not held regularly every month and that helps build the eagerness among the people to enjoy it to the fullest unlike the fairs held in cities. I like the village fair so much that I would like to travel to my village every year just to enjoy it again.
