US ambassador's remarks on Manipur violence; says "United States is ready to assist India, if asked"

Eric Garcetti's statement on Manipur violence

US envoy Eric Garcetti said the United States is ready to assist India, if asked, in dealing with the situation in Manipur. Over 100 people have died in the ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur.

US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti on Thursday said the United States is ready to assist India in dealing with the violence in Manipur. Garcetti said for the US, Manipur is a "human concern" and it can bring more investment if peace is in place.

On Thursday, a woman was shot dead outside a school in Manipur's Imphal West district, a day after schools reopened in the area. The turmoil in Manipur began after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organized to contest the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status. Since then, more than 100 people have lost their lives in the ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki communities.

At a press conference in Kolkata, Ambassador Eric Garcetti said, "Let me speak about Manipur first. We pray for peace there. When you ask us about the concern of the United States, I don't think it's a strategic concern. I think it's about human concern."
